About Gippsland Youth Spaces
Gippsland Youth Spaces Inc. (GYS Inc.) is a youth-led, community-based charity empowering young people across Gippsland. With a central hub in Morwell and a mobile service model, we work alongside young people, communities and partner organisations to design and deliver programs that strengthen youth voice, connection and opportunity.
Guided by the Collective Impact model, "nothing about us without us", we partner with local councils, Headspace, Berry Street, Lifeline Gippsland, CASA, Relationships Australia and others to deliver inclusive, safe and engaging youth programs.
About this opportunity – Youth Development Officer
We are seeking a motivated and community-minded Youth Development Officer to deliver engaging youth programs and provide direct support to young people across Gippsland.
Based at our Morwell office with travel to other Gippsland sites as required, this is a hands-on, frontline role focused on youth engagement, program delivery and case support. You will work under the direction of the Team Leader and alongside a supportive team to contribute to safe, inclusive and youth-centered services that promote wellbeing, participation and positive outcomes for young people.
This role involves regular face-to-face engagement with young people, regional travel, and occasional after-hours work. The role is primarily site-based, however working days may be negotiable.
Key responsibilities include
- Delivering and supporting youth programs, activities and events such as arts, recreation, leadership and wellbeing initiatives
- Providing direct youth support, information, referrals and advocacy using a strength-based approach
- Supporting at-risk young people to build resilience, confidence and life skills
- Assisting young people and families to navigate education, employment, health and community services
- Supporting outreach activities, workshops, events and facilitated excursions
- Maintaining accurate records, case notes and program documentation
- Contributing to program monitoring, evaluation and continuous improvement
- Promoting child safety, wellbeing and inclusion in all aspects of service delivery
About you
We are looking for someone who brings:
Essential requirements
- Relevant qualifications (ideally Cert IV or above) in youth work, social work, community development, education or a related field
- Demonstrated experience working directly with young people, including those experiencing vulnerability or disadvantage
- Ability to engage young people using strength-based, trauma-informed and youth-centered approaches
- Sound understanding of child safety obligations, professional boundaries and mandatory reporting
- Strong communication, organisation and administration skills
- Ability to work independently within established guidelines and as part of a team
- Current Working with Children Check, National Police Check (or ability to obtain) and unrestricted Victorian Driver’s Licence
Desirable
- Experience working in youth, community or not-for-profit settings
- Experience supporting outreach programs or community-based activities
- Knowledge of local Gippsland services and referral pathways

Key Selection Criteria

- Youth Engagement and Support
Demonstrated experience working directly with young people, including providing support, information, referrals and advocacy using a strength-based approach. - Program Delivery and Participation
Experience supporting the planning, delivery and evaluation of youth programs, activities, events or outreach initiatives. - Child Safety and Professional Practice
Understanding of child safety requirements, professional boundaries and mandatory reporting obligations, with the ability to apply policies in practice. - Communication and Collaboration
Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to work effectively with young people, families, colleagues and external services. - Administration and Organisation
Demonstrated ability to complete administrative tasks accurately, maintain records and case notes, and use digital systems to support service delivery.
